Introduction to Various Drilling Methods of Rotary Drilling Rig

A good driller should always be clear about the type and strength of the geology being drilled, what kind of drilling tools to apply and what drilling method is the most effective, so that the load can be minimized, the wear and tear minimized, and the progress maximized.

 

The drilling methods of rotary drilling rigs can be divided into four types according to the geological conditions: cutting, crushing, toggling and grinding.

 

I. Cutting type

 

Cutting drilling uses bucket teeth and double-bottom sand bucket with friction type drill pipe to drill into the strata with low resistance, such as mud layer, powder and sand layer with geological strength within 400 kPa.

 

II. Crushing type

 

In most cases, double-bottom rock-entry buckets are used for crushing drilling, which can be equipped with friction or machine-locked drilling rods according to the geological strength, and can drill into sand and gravel, mudstone, sandstone, shale and medium weathering with the strength of 500 kPa to 1000 kPa.

 





III. Toggling type


The toggle type can be used with double-bottom sand and double-bottom rock drilling bucket, and can also be used with Bauer teeth. Due to the different types of geology, the drilling method will be changed, for example, in the case of pebble layer, because the pebbles are irregularly arranged and cannot be cut and broken, the toggle type can be used for drilling by hanging the drill pipe with the main roll, toggling the pebbles with the tip of the bucket teeth, loosening the pebbles and putting the bucket down after floating. 

IV. Grinding type

The grinding type uses a rock entry cartridge drill and a dental shaft drill, together with a machine-locked drill rod to drill into rock formations with a single circumferential compressive strength calculated from a few MPa to tens of MPa, usually for rock entry end-bearing piles, by ring-cutting and grinding into the rock through the cartridge drill, or by grinding through the dental shaft drill, while not excluding the possibility of crushing according to the type, strength, brittleness and fracture of the rock formation.
